A Protector, A Hero... My Brother

Protector: a person or thing that protects; defender; guardian.
Hero:  a man of distinguished courage or ability, admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities.

Two simple words that hold so much meaning that can describe my brother. I can say now that I am older, that my brother has become one of my best friends. Yes, we still fight... even if we are in our twenties, but that's what siblings do. He may also be one of the people that can get on my nerves the most, especially because he perfected that art when we were children and knows just what to do to make me mad.
However, I know that he loves me and has my back no matter what and will always be there for me. (sorry if this gets a little mushy). I don't even know if he knows how much he means to me. Whatever, I may say in this post Shane may deny, however, this is how I saw it as I was growing up.
He probably didn't really like me when we were younger, but he used to let me sit by him everyday on the school bus. I know he probably didn't want to sit by me. And he most likely wanted to sit by his friends (but lucky for me, 3 could fit into a seat). So, I would smush right up against the window and he would sit in the middle so that one of his friends could still sit by him.
Then there was a time on the playground where I was creating my little snowman and some boy came up and kicked him down. But, have no fear, Shane was there to chase after that rude boy for ruining my snowman.
Don't let that cute freckly face of a boy fool you, he had his mean streaks. He could practically get me to do anything... The usual was "Hey, if you help me clean my room, I will help you clean yours... but we clean my room first." I would gladly accept this proposal and then as I cleaned, he sat there and found toys to play with. We, but mostly me, would finish cleaning his room and be ready to move onto mine... Lets just say, I never got help. (and don't blame me for being a naive 4 year old)
Shane also took up a nice little hobby called karate. I ,however, became the poor victim of him practicing his karate moves. And as we got older I also became the butt ends of his jokes. Here is the classic that he still laughs about...
         Me: What is 8x8x8?
         Shane:... Courtney's weight.
(You may not find this funny, and neither did my 11 year old self...)
Shane loved me, despite the fact that I almost killed his bird about 2 or 3 times. The first, I may or may not have let it escape out the front door in the middle of winter, but Shane loved his little bird so much he ran out side bare foot, with only a pair of shorts on to go find him. I also can be a little mean myself and make fun of him, so he got upset and pushed me on the ground. However, at the time his bird was out walking around, so he pushed me and I landed on his bird. Shane immediately pushed me off the bird and walked away making sure his bird was okay, which he was. (Oh, but don't worry, I was okay too)
As we got older, we became better friends, even though there was still fighting. People would say to me that they thought Shane and I had a good relationship for being brother and sister in high school. Some of my friends with brothers of similar ages wished that they had the relationship that my brother and I had. There was a point in my life that I actually would tell my brother more about boys I had a crush on, more than I told my friends. But, there was also that one time he drove around the neighborhood and told me he was not taking me home until I told him who I liked. Forced? I say, yes.
Shane and I both have the opportunity to go to the same college, which is great! He makes an effort to see me and even buys me ice cream and occasionally lunch or dinner. He is a great brother and a great guy for anyone to know.
One of the main reasons for this quite lengthy post is that he just got married to an amazing girl on Saturday. He chose to marry her in an LDS temple where we believe that marriage can last for eternity. He is such a great example to me and he has great faith. I wanted to let him know that he has done a lot for me, that I look up to him and that I love him. Because of him, I wish for my first child to be a boy  just so that they can have a big brother as great as mine to look out for them. Now, he has the opportunity to take care of a wife and someday a family and I know that he will do great because for so long he was my protector and my hero... which I know that he will always be. And most importantly he will always be MY brother.
Congrats to the two of them! They make a great couple. He will be a great husband and father someday.

Until next time,
Courtney
